Billesley Valley River Project

The Valley Riverside Project was formed in 2006 by local residents to improve the nature reserve on the lower end of Billesley Common.  Since then the group have arranged for many improvements including litter bins and noticeboards to be installed.  An outdoor fitness route has been included. Volunteer work is carried out regularly including maintaining pathways, litterpicking and training days.

We had brilliant turnout on March 23rd with over 50 volunteers of all ages willing to help with the Big Tidy Up of Billesley Common and Holly Bank Spinney. The newly formed 1st Billesley Scouts took part with their Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Leaders. Members of the Moseley Rugby Club also joined us.
This year we split into three teams so that we could target particular areas of concern;
The hedgerow alongside the common’s footpath and children’s play area,
The Yardley Wood Road and Haunch Lane corner alongside the Haunch Brook. And the Holly Bank Spinney
where many years of overgrown rubbish including a mattress was removed. It was good to see so many volunteers enjoying their burger and chips afterwards, thanks to MRC. Together we collected over 50 bags of rubbish and other items of dumped household refuse.
Well done everyone !
Thankfully all was collected by the City Council on Monday morning.

Conservation Work
Members of the Valley Riverside Project have been taking care of the nature reserve alongside the Haunch Brook for 8 years. We’ve kept footpaths open, coppiced, planted hedges & trees and monitored water quality, as well as regular litter picking. New members are always welcome; our next workdays are :
